The Road To Visual Badassery! :D
Part 1 - Sharper Than Reality

In this tutorial, I teach you the most important technique
all digital artists should use today to produce high quality
paintings or drawings. It's the number 1 secret to the
photorealism of my paintings, and yet very fundamental.
Also, I bring you behind the scenes and give you an in depth,
up close look at some of my paintings to see the technique
in action. Again, get the video file here www.deviantart.com/download/31… .

If you want to bring your art quality to the next level, do this! :)

---------------------------------------------------

Here are the paintings I am talking about in this tutorial:

Don't miss my tutorial on composition!

I downloaded the file, but it's not opening properly. Is something wrong with the link? Also, is it supposed to play on this site? It's not playing when I click on it.

It's a zip file, you have to unpack it first.

Yes I tried that. It unzips to a cpgz file. When I click on that it turns back into a zip file haha. I have no idea what's going on. Does it not work on a Mac?

Interesting to watch, certainly. I'd had this theory in my head already, and this video confirms it. The only issue is not over-refining the large version...

Is this on youtube or something? If you're giving it away freely here on deviantart then I'm going to assume you have no problem with people seeing it freely, but I'd much rather just watch it somewhere than download a potential virus or something. That would actually be much more convenient anyway. Is there somewhere I can do that? Watch it without downloading and unpacking a zip?

Ah, this is so reassuring. I can be such a perfectionist when it comes to art. But I realize that you don't have to be perfect. You just have to work big. :D

Thank you for giving so much back to the community, friend. I will take a look at this video, as I am about to get back into digital painting; just got a copy of Adobe Illustrator and it's burning a hole in my computer - to get started!

This is very helpful. I usually work on large resolutions anyways, but the way you talked about it made more sense to me. I always try to focus on making even tiny details realistic, and I frustrate myself and my work looks bad because of it. I need to focus more on the big picture.

I've tried useing your technique in my own personal paintings and the main difference that I find in them is just a smaller picture (I do turn the resolution up as well). I don't find any sharpness differences and even when I work on a painting for hours and days it still doesn't come out well. Even when I zoom in and make sure the lines are straight, it still just doesn't work for me. It looks so easy, I really am clueless why I find it so hard.

But you do drawings, and in order for drawings to look good, you have to be able to draw well. Painting isn't drawing, though. And whenever you use a large canvas and shrink it, the result will be sharper and better than you would've gotten had you used a small canvas to begin with.

Thankyou for looking at my page and responding. The paintings that I am doing now I have not put on DA because I am embarassed of the poor quality and their utter failures. So far I've only uploaded lineart and sketches.(even though I still need work on those too.)

What sized canvas do you suggest that I use? In a current painting that I am doing I used 1700 X 2020 pixels and shrunk it down to 900 X 1096 when I thought it was finished. The colors shifted a little when I changed the size, nothing looks real or good, the details suck and I don't have a clue how to make anything on this better. I've looked through and tried countless tutorials and nothing has really helped me. I can hardly tell what I'm doing wrong and right! XD

I'd say about 6000x4000 pixels and then shrink it to something like 1200 width. That's more like it :)
