Help!! I'm In The Past!!! D:

Sun Nov 11, 2012, 3:00 AM
I mean it! I'm actually in the past right now!

Wait ... what is "now", anyway? I ... let's see...

Hmmm, well ... there is no such thing as the "present". All things actually exist at the "same time". It's a huge misconception of people's picture of time.

When an object moves through space, it moves slower through time. If I wave my hand back and forth, its clock runs slower, so it stays behind the rest of me in time. It is now in the past relative to the rest of me. But my hand is still here. If what people call the present were a moment constant in time, then my hand should be gone, as I just sent it into the past. This is true for all particles in the universe. So why are we still in the "present"?

The answer is that there is only 1 space. If you were to travel into the past, you would still occupy this space. You have 4 coordinates; 3 for your point in space and 1 for your point in time.

Even a time traveler who goes 10 minutes into the past would still be visible here, because he or she also needs to occupy a point in space. In movies, the person just disappears and reappears in the past, but that is also a misconception. The time traveler can't occupy a different space, since there is only one. Their time coordinate may have changed, but they are still HERE. Which means they never went back in the first place.

We exist here.

Did you know that a black hole is actually the end of time?
It is literally at the end of eternity. If someone far away watches you as you go towards a black hole, the observer sees your time run slower until it stops completely at a certain distance from the center. Once you arrive there, you forever remain a frozen image for the observer. Meanwhile, seen from your position, the universe speeds up, because 1 second far away is only a fraction of a second to you. You are moving into the far future and the entire history of the universe unfolds itself around you, until you reach the "surface" of the black hole, where time stops as seen from the outside. You have now moved to the end of time. And as you enter the black hole, space and time interchange their meaning - the direction towards the center is now the direction of the future, and since time still goes on where you are, you are moving inwards towards the future until you reach the center at the end of eternity.

But you know what? Even the end of time exists here in what you call the present. And it can move through space.

We all have our own path through the 4-dimensional fabric of spacetime through which we are moving. Time is not a thing, it's a real direction in which we are traveling - and as I described, time can even change its direction so much that it becomes a direction in space, namely inside a black hole. We all exist at different times, sometimes going a bit faster, sometimes a bit slower, but we all exist HERE, in the same space. We can't perceive different positions in time, we only perceive different positions in space.

So what then is the present? It is the location of all particles in space as seen from your reference frame. And a time traveler can't go into the past, because there is no such thing.

The dinosaurs are in the past only in the sense that their atoms have changed their position and went to form different structures. But the same atoms have always existed here. The only thing that ever changes for us with time are coordinates in space.

By the way. Since the universe is expanding, what does it expand into? It expands into the future!

I wish you a good change of spacial coordinates within the next 24 hours as seen from your reference frame day.

P.S. None of this is made up, this is standard physics (:

Funny, how I'm many of the norm who wasn't at all confused. :XD:
I really needed an article as such. A li'l bit of Physics can always get me in the mood.
Thanks for unraveling all this information~!

SO....So....so....complicated..........spare me a bit of time to rethink my 'past' so that i can disregard it and the 'present' so as to move on into the 'future' just a little brighter, or darker in the case that i go into the future via a black-hole.

I agree with this and find it facsinating... Until the last sentence. It's like you're saying "I'm a physicist, so everything I say is true."

Or something.

Actually, no, just ignore me.

Actually, this was allready explanated by Einstein I think, sounds so pro Einstein name :XD: Sorry, but i think you want to explain too, right? :)

Well, life does stops ever so yeah, but now Im thinking of something, your explanation is also something spiritual, there is one creature who never stops, for as symbol then. You may guess what It Is ;) Its a bird, maybe as easy hint :)

Life also never stops, thats why the explanation of this bird creature. Guess his name, and you know what i mean. ;)

So, that is were all the sharks, dinosaurs and snakes disappeared to - temporarily into my dimension. I could actually sense them within the sent documents.

I just came across this today and it reminded me of when you posted this journal. If you've seen it already, cool. But if not, enjoy! ^_^ (though you prolly already know this because you are pretty damn knowledgeable already haha)

Yes, I'm subscribed to Vsauce - though I'm only interested in the science part of the channel. What Michael is talking about is how the brain perceives time, not the actual physics of time, though :)
You should watch the talk he is linking to in his description: [link] It's by the researcher who's work Michael's video is based on :)

Yea I know the differences, but it reminded me of yours because they both covered the subject of time and past etc. I love vsauce and watch a lot of his stuff (mostly the science based ones as well!) I will be sure to check out that other video too.

This is unrelated, but he has a video of the phone books lifting a car and explains the science behind it. That was a fun one haha.

Yay for science!!

This is bloody brilliant! You sound like an Orson Scott Card novel right now. Only a lot more scientifically correct, but just as confusing. I love it! And I WILL understand it! Eventually... :)

I utterly enjoyed reading this. I'm going to fave this just to be able to reread it later. I'm a bit frustrated that I don't have the knowledge to verify what you are saying but I'll try to look into it.

Thanks for sharing.

so, this means (in effect) that you have already read this comment as i am actually typing it or even before i knew i was going to type it...or that the existance of this comment (in all realities) could both exist and not exist at the same time...

No, as I explained, there is no "past". We are all here, but we/our atoms age at a slightly different rate.

haHA that was beautiful! im not really into science but i love to learn things, and i am completely awestruck by space in paricular- tits huge and beautiful and terrifying and has really really weird things like black holes. am i right when i say that they are infinately dense and not even light cant get through? (i heard that somewhere but im not sure where so i dont trust it to be true) o.O science is so weird at the cosmic and quantum levels. ha i love you!

black holes are made from curved space and time, but the singularity at the center is infinitely dense, for as far as we know.

so if a black hole is made from a curve in space ad time, does that mean wormholes are impossible cuz it would just create a black hole?sorry id that's a stupid question.

worm holes aren't stable, and those that may be require negative energy to be open. So... probably not.

Thank you so much for your Journal Entry Help!! I'm In The Past!!! D: ~
I thoroughly enjoyed it and am fascinated by what you wrote. It makes sense. You convey what you want to say very adeptly.
As for you being "...in the past... How could you be? When there is no past and/or present? Everything, so to speak, is now? Yes___ or No___ ?

No, you have your time as seen from your reference frame, and I have my time as seen from mine. And they are not the same, because we travel along different paths through spacetime. That's relativity! :)
